Susan Brearey – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Susan Brearey (USA) is a painter who uses art to explore contemporary urban and rural landscape.

”I make images that reflect the ways in which I have seen animals in both their natural habitats and human-imposed frameworks. I am often struck by the fleeting instant of a deer or bear whose terrain I have wandered near. Through these fortunate encounters I begin to understand the often unseen parts of the world. I am inspired by the peace, beauty and solitude I find within wilderness areas, studying and observing the habitats, plants and creatures with whom we share the planet. At the same time I know that wilderness is nearly a fiction. All wilderness is managed and bound by our activities. Power and telephone lines, poles, and fences are everywhere, constant and striking reminders of human presence.  I am interested in the visual tensions created by this never-ending stream of interruptions in the contemporary urban and rural landscape. For me, these interruptions are symbolic of a fragmented landscape.”
