Artist-in-residence

For Supermarket Galleri Konstepidemin has invited two guest to share our space. Konstepidemin´s artists-in-residence and the Artist Elin Wikström. Last year the residency started the forum Crisis–Populism–Art, where local and international artists have been working together. Some of the works will be presented in an exhibition curated by the artist Anna Lamberg, with work of Ismail Hosny (Egypten), Patricia Vane (Holland), Anna Wieselgren (Sverige/Kanada) and Stina Östberg. In the other half, the Artist Elin Wikström explores consumerism in a new site specific and interactive work, Piracy Bastard Remix Axfood Orkla. The work is based on her intervention at Konstepidemin’s restaurant October 2014.

Elin Wikström. At artist Elin Wikström’s intervention in the restaurant of the studio and cultural association Konstepidemin – The Epidemic of art, guests were invited to take part in food tests and grading of a number of products. On the first day seven industrially produced orange marmalades were tested, appearance and aroma assessed, first without, then with toast and butter. In the piece the artist put herself and the audience in the shot 
line consumerism. How in the sea of brands and standardization are food products chosen and selected away?

April 16 – 19 2015 visitors in the Konstepidemin Gallery’s booth at Supermarket Art Fair will be invited to a 
tasting of the artists self-manufactured hybrid, an orange marmalade created by a mixture of the two brands that were given the highest rating in the test. In the new work she takes the starting point in what we eat and how 
we eat as equally important markers in identity formation as music and uses food products in the same way 
as the remix culture in music has challenged taste, aesthetics and copyright.

Elin Wikström is based in Göteborg and works with performance and participatory driven projects. Working 
in this format is an attempt to question norms, values and logics for how we speak, think and act, on an 
individual level as well as in society at large, and to trigger reflections on current social, political and cultural 
issues. The reasons behind developing such methods are to try to represent individuals and groups as active 
subjects, able to consider and reconsider their understanding of themselves and the world and become 
aware of conditions they previously had less knowledge of.

Konstepidemins artist–in–residence. The artist co–operative Konstepidemin has many years experience of administrating artist–in–residence projects. The group has welcomed international artists for more than twenty years and given them the opportunity to develop their work and projects in our community. With almost 140 artists in different disciplines, Konstepidemin is Swedens largest work place for artists. This year Konstepidemin will participate in Supermarket in Stockholm with  a presentation of ours international art project, Crisis–Populism–Art.

Crisis–Populism–Art. The difference between the rich and the poor has never been so large as it is today. Countries and economies seem to exist for those who are already priviliged, and not for the whole of society. In Sweden the segregation increases clearly as a result of ethnical and social economic factors. Populistic political parties become more attractive to voters in Europé, and similar tendencies are taking place in other parts of the world. At the same time political protests grow stronger, as for example the ”Arabian spring” with demans for goverments to abdicate, change of regimes, and democratic reforms. Even in other countries voices are raised, people organize themselves in human rights movements and demand alternatives, social reforms, and justice. Ten international and local artists within different disciplines, picture-making, experimental music, rap, textile, theatre production and performance. Have together studied the political and social landscape in Gothenburg, Europa and the world, and approached questions of politics, responsability, language, and participation. Part of this project will be shown at Supermarket in an exhibition curated by the artist Anna Lamberg, with work of Ismail Hosny (Egypten), Patricia Vane (Holland), Anna Wieselgren (Sverige/Kanada) and Stina Östberg.

Stina Östberg, born 1979, grew up in the town of Sundsvall and studied at the Valand Academy in Göteborg, the Academy of Umeå and the Royal Academy in Stockholm. Her works involve many different methods including film, textile and photography. Even artist based curatorial projects have came to have a central place in her work. Her work has been shown at the Bukarest Biennale, Bonnier Arthall, Malmö Art Center, and ”Art Rotterdam”.

Anna Wieselgren’s multi-disciplinary practice includes sculpture, installation and textiles. She studied drawing 
and sculpture at the New York Studio School in New York, completed her undergraduate studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, Canada and earned an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England. Wieselgren has participated in residency programs at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Chisenhale Dance Space in London, England and at Konstepidemin in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards for her work including several artist grants from the Ontario Arts Council, a fellowship from the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and a Commonwealth Scholarship from the British Council. Her work has been exhibited in North America and Europe, most recently at Cambridge.

Ismail Hosny is a producer/songwriter/sound engineer, one half of Wetrobots, co-founder of Epic-101 Studios, and a member of the Kairo is Koming collective (KIK). Under the name Ismael, his production work gravitates towards the darker ends of the electronic music spectrum, from emotionally driven electronica to bass to techno. Outside the alias of Ismael, Ismail Hosny has worked on several different projects ranging from producing Arabic pop to more experimental projects with noise and field recordings.

Patricia Vane has a degree in illustration, with projects that show use of other art disciplines: working with textiles in 2d and 3d, with film, motion graphics and photography. In her graduation year she took an interest in designing for children and that made her explore pedagogy, anthroposophy, developmental psychology in a teacher training. 
In the meantime she was working in fashion retail and that eventually showed her the possibility to use textiles and the body. This new interest was increased also by the practise of meditation, yoga and dancing. During a Fashion Design course, she has found this state where everything comes together. It must be all sprouting from her ongoing desire to study Earth and the connection with her, as herself as human. Visually it results in raw garment pieces created on intuition, in a very slow motion.

Galleri Konstepidemin is an artist-run art gallery that consists of several exhibition spaces, each with a different character.
