Konstepidemin is Sweden’s biggest workplace for independent artists. Since the 1980s, we have been located near Linnéplatsen in Gothenburg, where we house 130 professional practitioners of artistic disciplines, including visual artists and designers, musicians, writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, dancers etc. Konstepidemin is a central meeting place for the arts and culture of Gothenburg, and a catalyst for numerous ideas and thoughts in the fields of visual arts, literature, theater and music.
Konstepidemin has run an artist-in-residence program for more than 20 years. We have five studio apartments and accept 15-20 international artists, writers, musicians, curators and speakers annually. The productive artistic environment, and the opportunity to develop one’s artistry and projects locally, is an important reason why artists seek us out, and often return.
We aim to involve our artists-in-residence in public interaction, initiating both aesthetic and political conversations, and we welcome a variety of artistic positions.
Satellit In the fall of 2014, we launch the artist-in-residence pilot project in Angered. We have initiated an artist residence in collaboration with Kulturhuset Blå Stället, Kultur i Väst and Angeredsteatern. This initiative is a response to the often closed nature of the Gothenburg art scene. The goal of the Angered residence is to create and strengthen relations for individual artists, independent culture workers and various actors in the cultural field. We want to raise important questions about politics, responsibility, participation and democracy through the medium of art.
IASPIS Every year, two artists are invited through the International Artists Studio Program In Sweden/Göteborg (IASPIS/Gbg). The IASPIS/Gbg group recommends artists for studio residency, and the decision is then made by the Swedish Arts Grants Committee in Stockholm, which provides grants for travel and other expenses for the guest artists. As of 2014, Konstepidemin is the host of IASPIS/Gbg. Recommendations for international IASPIS artist are made twice a year, spring and fall.
