Ndidi Dike

Ndidi Dike is a sculptor and cultural activist from Lagos, Nigeria and Artist in Residence at Konstepidemin December 1st – January 2nd 2017.

During her residency at Konstepidemin Ndidi Dike will research and explore issues of migration, marginalization, otherisation , discplacement apparel, Visa application processes and compatriot partiality:protectionism.

Ndidi Dike has worked consistently through the decades across diverse contemporary art forms becoming a leading figure on the continent and at home. Nigeria resonates through worldwide exhibitions such as “Seven Stories About Modern Art in Africa” at Whitechapel Art Gallery London in 1995. Since graduating from the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1984 she has revisited painting after years of transgressive sculptural practice having taught herself to sculpt. Weaving materials and meaning through both conventional and unconventional experimental procedures. In her multiple exhibitions she has explored the transformation of the value of human life, through global processes of, commodification, consumerism, urbanism, globalization, slavery, post colonial studies, cross border/country migration, art history and contemporary politics.

Among various indepth research themes she has explored the slave trade, in “Waka – Into – Bondage: The Last ¾ Mile” (Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos 2008), and migration in “Constellations and Antecedents of Migrant “Mobility”, ( Iwalewahaus Bayreuth Germany 2016). Including the relationship between power, petroleum and politics in “State of The Nation new works and installations” (National Museum Onikan Lagos 2016). Using objects as material metaphor, she catalyzes the multiple singularities in our collective experiences of everyday life through the vibrant prism of visual culture that situates Nigeria within the transnational landscape.
