Sigrid Bjørkedal

My background is mainly as a painter, often using photography in the process. Right now I allow more experimentation and have a creative process also in other media. I am enthusiastic about many materials and remain eager to learn more and try new things. My latest exhibition relates to the theme of living with cystic kidneys (ADPKD) in the family. It features ceramic forms, some objects of reused or natural material, in addition to the paintings. In painting I use various techniques, from acrylic and pen drawing to ink and oil.

The stay at Konstepidemin will be my longest artist residency so far. Living in a quieter part of Norway on the mountainous west coast, it has become increasingly important for me to reach out, meet other artists, and engage with the current art scene. While in Gothenburg, I also hope to visit some exhibitions and places of interest in cities that are more easily accessible from here. I look forward to working with printmaking, drawing, and painting, exploring other possibilities, and finding a calm, focused work routine during my two-month stay. I deeply appreciate such opportunities and I am excited about this experience.

BIO
I grew up with a deep connection to nature and farm life. At 16, I left home to attend Folkehøgskole, where I chose to focus on art, having already painted extensively on my own. After three years in Norway, I decided to pursue a foundation year and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (four years) in three different regions of Great Britain. I then moved to Oslo, where I continued my work and education, teaching art, working in an art gallery, creating my own art, and exhibiting. However, after a long period of art related work I felt the need to be more in nature. I became a tour leader, primarily in the Nordic countries, for several years, including the Swedish and Finnish North.

Through my travels, I have explored various cultures and met people with different ways of thinking and living. These diverse experiences have shaped my art practice, which is deeply connected to life, local communities, heritage, nature, and human relationships. I now appreciate working only with art again. Taking needed time for nature and health, by living a calmer life.
