Konstepidemin is an artist-run cultural center and studio association in Gothenburg. It is one of Sweden’s largest workplaces for independent artists, hosting over 120 practitioners from various artistic disciplines, including visual artists, sculptors, writers, musicians, filmmakers, actors, and more.
Konstepidemin serves as a platform for artistic projects and exchanges—locally, nationally, and internationally. Every week, cultural activities take place, such as exhibitions at Galleri Konstepidemin, theater performances, workshops for children and youth, artist residencies, concerts, talks, performances, and much more.
Atop a hill near Linnéplatsen in central Gothenburg lies Konstepidemin, a site consisting of fourteen buildings surrounded by a large park. The area was formerly Gothenburg’s Epidemic Hospital but was transformed into an artist-run cultural center in 1987. Today, it houses studios, spaces for exhibitions, theater, music, educational activities, as well as a restaurant and communal meeting spaces.
For over thirty years, Konstepidemin has been an important hub and meeting place for Gothenburg’s independent cultural scene. It is an artist-led association driven by the engagement and ideas of its members. The association primarily contributes to spreading high-quality culture through its public program but also actively participates in and initiates vital discussions about the important role of art in society.
