Maria Lindberg was born in 1958 in Ljushult, Sweden. She lives and works in Gothenburg.

Lindberg’s work manifests as an observation of seemingly modest, everyday events and occurrences. Language and an underlying humor—alternating between dark and subtle—also play a central role in her art. She works primarily with drawing and painting, but also photography, collage, and performative actions that draw parallels to the 1960s Fluxus movement. Lindberg’s expression is characterized by a stripped-back, minimalist approach, where the works are often multi-layered, addressing societal norms and structures while also touching on emotions like closeness, solitude, and longing.
