Marie Hermansson (b. 1956) is an author whose works include the novels Musselstranden, Mannen under trappan, Himmelsdalen, and Den stora utställningen.

Marie made her literary debut in 1986 with Albert Bonniers Förlag with the short story collection Det finns ett hål i verkligheten (There is a Hole in Reality). Since then, she has written thirteen novels. Several of them have been translated and published in twenty languages.

The book that has reached the widest audience is Musselstranden. Set in Bohuslän, it explores themes of disappearances and Scandinavian folklore traditions of being taken into the mountains.

Mannen under trappan was adapted for television by SVT, and Himmelsdalen, set at a clinic in the Swiss Alps, became an international TV series.

Marie became interested in the Gothenburg Tercentennial Jubilee Exposition held in 1923. She knew very little about it initially, but the more she learned, the more fascinated she became. She found it incredible that something like that had existed in her own hometown without her knowing about it—a city within the city, with soaring towers and domes, and a giant event attracting 4 million visitors. For her, discovering the exposition was like a gateway to another era. It felt entirely fitting that Albert Einstein gave his Nobel lecture on the relativity of time right there. Learning that he arrived two days late for his own lecture was another intriguing discovery that gave her the idea for the novel Den stora utställningen.

Marie stayed in 1920s Gothenburg for her next two novels set in the same period: Pestön and Längst in i skogen. In these books as well, she blends historical reality with fiction.

It is difficult to categorize Marie’s books into a single genre. While she often uses a mystery or a crime as a driving force in the narrative, her stories are not traditional crime fiction. She frequently moves along the outer fringes of reality, yet she does not write fantasy.
