Oda Brekke is a choreographer and dancer based in Stockholm. She is currently working in collaboration with dance artists Maia Means and Lisa Schåman, composer Hara Alonso and visual artist Mathilde Sundfjord Sæthre. Together they are busy with the notions of surface, emptiness and traces, making the performance ‘When there’s only surface left’ that will premiere at Weld in Stockholm, August 2021.
We experiment with techniques from dance, music and plastic arts to study methods that can amplify everyday things that typically pass unnoticed. To spend time with the tactile and sonorous experience of surface is a means of tuning into something concrete in a society where technologies constantly abstract our relationships; to one another, with the environments we are part of, and the things we coexist with. Turning towards surfaces makes our rhythm shift. We linger with the traces that are there. Some are carved out–an absence of something that used to be there. Some are rests, leftovers– a layer of something else. Through performing actions such as emptying, tracing and surfacing we slowly follow the tracks, pathways and marks carved out by repetitions in objects, rooms and human bodies.
The residency at Konstepidemin is carried out by Oda Brekke and Mathilde Sundfjord Sæthre and is arranged by Danscentrum Väst and Konstnärsnämndens International Dance Program in collaboration with Konstepidemin.
Short Bio:
Oda Brekke (NO) is a dance artist working as choreographer, performer and writer. She is educated at the BA program of Dance Performance at DOCH/Stockholm University of the Arts. Her work explores experimental methods oscillating between dance and text as materials. She works through the organisation INSISTER SPACE and the collective studio höjden in Stockholm. In 2020 she has been part of the editorial team behind the publication ‘Art as object/Art as practice’, produced as part of the nordic platform PIM (Para Institutional Models) where she contributes with a text co-written with Copenhagen based dancer and choreographer Emilia Gasiorek. She is also collaborating with choreographer Alexander Talts, musician Foad Arbabi and designer Hannah Baklien on the performance ‘Där en samling av förnimmelser landar’. As a performer she has worked with choreographers such as Karen Eide Bøen, Gry Tingskog, Ellen Söderhult and Mira Mutka.
Mathilde Sundfjord Sæthre (NO) studies art with specialization in textile at KHIO in Oslo. Working sculpturally with everyday objects and stranger forms. Abstract, organic forms that are undefinably recognisable meets objects that are so familiar they almost become invisible. Through a practice that stays close to materials, things surrounding us are moved out of their functional regime, and thus produce something alien in the familiar and something familiar in the alien.
