Elizabeth Sercombe is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, researcher and facilitator, whose work continually inhabits questions and experiences of being and becoming.
Significant artistic projects include Artist: Existence Visibility Voice (2020) and pianoforte (2022-present). She is the author of Strange Adventures: Women’s Individuation in the Works of Pierrette Fleutiaux (Peter Lang: 2016), which explores and expands contemporary narratives of human transformation and leadership through the lenses of Jungian psychology and Beauvoirian Existentialism. Her contemporary feminist epic novel about a woman and a plant awaits an agent. In her community and human transformation consultancy, she collaborates with leaders to grow vision, capacity and depth through their work.
In the aftermath of the global pandemic and the reverberations of Artist: Existence Visibility Voice, I set out to embody the inspiration of that work in the terrains of my everyday lived experience.
Whereas the pandemic had extracted me from the patriarchal domains (business, church, academia, family) in which I had previously conducted my affairs, now I was returned to them. I was new, and many societal shifts were in progress, but often the profound changes wrought by the pandemic in lifestyle, mentality, community and proximity seemed as if pasted over with illusions and practices suited to other, newly-lost worlds.
How could I contribute the depths and truths discovered in my own transformations to the conversations in progress around me?
A series of collisions and confrontations ensued, Existence gnawing on the beauty, radiance and joy at the heart of my 2020 discoveries. It was a wilder struggle than even I had imagined. Certain places of my artist self grew substance; others fell into neglect.
In the summer of 2024 I found myself with a studio, two months and a quotation:
Not knowing
when the dawn
will come
