In the transition of Middle and East European countries from communism to parliamentary democracies there is a certain interdependent relation between the ideological or religious icons and the social aspects of the accumulation of capital. In many cities the newest architecture often consists either of church buildings or huge shopping malls. Through the series of performance and video works, the artist explores specific changes of values and belief systems in the eastern European countries.
Sandra Sterle is a visual artist working across performance art, film, installation and academic institutional contexts. Her works have been shown and performed internationally. Sandra is a professor of video and performance art at UMAS, Arts Academy in Split, Croatia and has lectured in many other institutions.
