Liz Looker (Australia) is Artist in Residence at Konstepidemin during July & August 2018.
Liz Looker is an award-winning Australian photographer whose work and exhibitions range from the ethereal to the commercial, portraiture to the experimental, landscape to raw human forms. Empathy and authenticity in both her approach and processes allow Liz to connect to the essence of her subjects.
“My ambition during my residency at Konstepidemin will be to continue my search for the spirit within, to find each individual’s core and spark, to capture and then release beauty through dynamic, fluid movement and long and/or multiple exposures. Mastery of light is paramount, and a powerful element of my photographic story-telling. I am a quiet observer. My subjects have lived for a few days, for a hundred years, they are men and women, children, strangers, friends of friends, anyone who will sit with me and trust me enough to show themselves.”
Shooting in her studio and on location around Gothenburg will provide a special resonance for Liz, as many of her maternal ancestors came from Sweden. One of them, sculptor Charles Haag, whose acclaimed early 20th century American exhibition, ”The Spirits of the Woods”, honoured the strength, humility, passion and persistence of humanity in mahogany, willow and oak, will inform and inspire her research and creative body of work during her tenure at Konstepidemin.
