Carl Javér

Carl Javér is a Swedish documentary filmmaker with numerous documentaries to his name, including three documentary series. His film Rekonstruktion Utøya was awarded two Guldbagge Awards in 2019 for Best Direction and Best Documentary, and was also nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize. He was a pioneer of documentary series in Sweden and has led workshops on observational documentary filmmaking throughout Scandinavia.

He made his debut in 1996 with Tel al Zaatar – The Way Back, co-directed with Anders Berggren, a film that won an Honorary Mention Award at the EU ECHO TV Awards. Carl is also highly regarded as a lecturer and dramaturg. In addition to his own films, he has worked as an editor on both fiction films and several documentaries.

In 2014, his film Freak Out premiered in cinemas and was nominated for the Nordic Dragon Award at the Göteborg International Film Festival. It won the Honorary Mention Award at Tempo Documentary Festival, the Main Award at Makedox in Macedonia, the Main Award at the Utopia Film Festival in the USA, and competed at festivals such as Doxa in Canada, Docville in Belgium, Dokfilm in Norway, Astra Film Festival in Romania, and Available Light in Yukon, Canada, among others. The film has won a total of 12 festival awards and has been broadcast on eight TV channels, including ARTE.

In autumn 2018, his latest documentary, Rekonstruktion Utøya, premiered and received the highest combined review scores of all Swedish films in 2018. The film had cinema premieres in both Norway and Denmark and had its international premiere at the Berlinale in 2019.

Carl is active as a teacher at Valand Academy and the Stockholm University of the Arts within documentary film, serves as chairman of the Swedish Film Directors within the trade union Scen & Film, and is a co-owner of the film company Vilda Bomben Film AB.
