Magnhild Opdøl (Norway /Ireland) is artist in residence at Konstepidemin during 2018
”My practice touches on subjects such as nature, value systems, representation, natural recourses, power and materials. For each work I try to use the medium that most fit the idea. Some ideas come from real places, real memories, stories and images, while others exist some place in popular culture or in a collective visual vocabulary. The beginning of a work is marked by an act of stepping back and rediscovering what has long been familiar.
In resent works I follow an idea of how we measure value. In From Inside I place a stone from inside a mountain beside a reproduction in bronze. As I created it my question was which one is the most valuable? Is it what we think it is (the bronze),or is it the one that isn’t (the stone)? The grey stone is unique, found inside a mountain, un-touched by any human before, un-seen since the beginning, placed beside a replica. But it is also one of millions of stones, a part of a mountain.”
