Olga García is a Spanish Professor of literature, as well as translator and essayist. She is currently working on a short history of Austrian Literature.

It’s well-known that Ture Sventon, praktiserande privatdetektiv is en svensk klassiker, the parodic detective series about the main character created by Åke Holmberg and published between 1948-1973. The fictional private investigator Ture Sventon lives and works in Stockholm. He is characterized by eating semlor, not being able to pronounce the letter “S”, and riding on a flying carpet. Olga García has been collecting for many years the nine Swedish children´s books written by Åke Holmberg. Using several translations of books Ture Sventon into Spanish, German, English, Italian, Dutch, etc. she is developing a systematic framework for dealing with the culture markers.

BIO

Professor of German Literature and Cultural History at the University of Extremadura (Spain). Areas of research: Austrian and Central European literature, transit spaces and non-places (particularly hotels and airports) in the German literature, explicit and implicit references to culture-specific phenomena in literary translation, literature of German minority in Romania and Slovenia. She has worked extensively on the Austrian writer Joseph Roth and has written the first Spanish-language biography of the renowned novelist and journalist.

Author of numerous publications on German-language literatures and culture of the 19th-21th centuries. She has also taught at universities in Austria, Germany, Costa Rica, Italy and Slovenia. Several translations, among others, Bertha von Suttner, Hermann Sudermann, Franz Hessel, Klabund, Franz Werfel, and Maria Leitner into Spanish.

Translator-in-residence (TIR) at the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium, Straelen (Germany); Contributor of Abolish Borders with Words, a poetry translation project in progress (www.abww.org); Jury member of the Straelener Translation Prize of the Foundation for Art and Culture NRW (Germany); Writer-in-residence at Franz Edelmaier Residenz of Swiss Society for the European Convention on Human Rights, Meran/o (Italy); Residency in the artist refuge Brechts Hus in Svendborg (Denmark).
She lives in Cáceres, Soria, Schleswig-Holstein, and on the road.
